2018 FCH JU Programme Review Report is now available

The 2018 FCH JU Programme Review Report is now available. This report was prepared by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and reviews the activities supported by the FCH 2 JU. It identifies the added value, effectiveness and techno-economic efficiency of FCH 2 JU projects.

This report covers 87 projects which were ongoing during 2017 and assessed the strengths and accomplishments of each project. The FCH 2 JU programme has supported the deployment of electrolysers for providing hydrogen for refuelling. In several projects in the Transport pillar electrolysers are demonstrated as an on-site hydrogen generation system. The report highlights the continued upscaling of electrolyser technology, and a rapid progression towards commercial deployments of electrolysers at increasing scale as illustrated below:

Within the Support for Market Uptake (cross-cutting) activities, the report highlights the progress made by projects in defining potential cost reductions, producing educational tools and developing analytical methods and test procedures.

BIG HIT was the first overarching FCH JU project covering both Energy and Transport. The trailblazing BIG HIT project has deployed a 1 MW PEM electrolyser from SHFCA member ITM Power, and is demonstrating replicable and integrated hydrogen energy solutions in an isolated territory. Hydrogen is seen as a solution to the wind curtailment problem of the Orkney Islands, as it can be used in power, heat and transport applications. The field experience generated by BIG HIT with a hydrogen energy system in a remote and harsh environment will also be shared with other ‘Hydrogen Valley’ and similar local energy projects producing and using green hydrogen.
