Hydrogen Refuelling

Orkney Islands Council (OIC) might be is Britain’s smallest local authority, but the Orkney Islands are leading the way with the generation and local use of renewable energy. OIC will be taking a significant part in the BIG HIT project, by providing 10 electric vans which will each be fitted with a hydrogen fuel cell.

The hydrogen refuelling station will be constructed in Kirkwall to support the Symbio vans which will form part of the Council’s fleet – their hydrogen fuel cells will give them a wider operational range than their battery-powered electric counterparts.

Refuelling a hydrogen vehicle is a very similar process to filling up a conventional car with petrol or diesel, via a nozzle and fuel pipe. Refuelling is quick and takes between 3 to 5 minutes.
