BIG HIT will create a hydrogen territory in the Orkney Islands of Scotland by implementing a fully integrated model of hydrogen production, storage, transportation and utilisation for heat, power and mobility.

HYSEAS III will to pave the way for the building and launch of the world’s first sea-going car and passenger ferry fuelled by hydrogen. The supported development is expected to cost around €12.6 million. The vessel’s fuel will be produced from renewable electricity marking a paradigm shift towards entirely emissions-free marine transport. The successful test will allow a vessel to be constructed, in the already assured knowledge that such a vessel can operate safely and efficiently around Scotland’s challenging coast. The vessel is planned to operate in and around Orkney, which is already producing hydrogen in volume from constrained –hence otherwise wasted – renewable energy.
The €11m Integrating Tidal Energy into the European Grid (ITEG) project brings together partners from across the UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands to address energy-related carbon emissions in North-West Europe and tackle grid export limitations faced in remote areas such as Orkney.
The project consortium includes EMEC, Scotrenewables Tidal Power, AREVA H2Gen, the Energy Systems Catapult, Energy Valley/New Energy Coalition, University of Caen Normandy, University of Le Havre Normandy, Ghent University and the Normandy Development Agency.
The official opening of BIG HIT brings together communities, industry, and politicians who are all working together to deploy one of Europe’s leading energy systems. BIG HIT will enable more renewable energy to be produced and used locally in the Orkney Islands of Scotland and also support similar deployments more widely. BIG HIT has been widely recognised as the leading project of its kind in Europe. BIG HIT, involving 12 participants based across six EU countries and funded by the EU FCH JU. The Orkney Islands of Scotland were chosen for this development because of the need to store excess renewable energy and utilise the stored energy locally for transport and heat.
The Joint European Summer School JESS 2018 offers graduate level courses on selected topics of fuel cells, electrolyser, and battery technologies. This series of summer schools has been ongoing since 2004 and targets an audience of university students (MSc and PhD levels), and post-doctoral researchers. More experienced researchers and engineers wishing to review these technologies and expand their general knowledge, for instance, to suit a newly acquired position or collect credits for a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) scheme are welcome as well.
The 10th Scottish Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Conference annual conference takes place on Wednesday 26th September 2018 in Dundee, one of Scotland’s most vibrant cities. This one day conference will showcase hydrogen and fuel cell applications and their deployment as efficient and integrated low emission energy systems.
SHFCA members and delegates will hear expert speakers during sessions on international trade and partnerships, and how hydrogen and fuel cells can be the smarter choice in Heat, Power, and Transport for low carbon deployments. The underpinning themes will be use of high efficiency fuel cells for clean power and hydrogen as the clean energy vector, and how these can both support the delivery of Scotland’s new Energy Strategy and Climate Plan.
The International Conference on Marine Renewable Energy and Maritime Hydrogen Technology will provide the latest updates on technology, policies, projects and business cases within the subsea, marine renewable energy and maritime hydrogen industries.
Reykjavik, Iceland, is hosting the Nordic Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Conference 2018. This conference will focus on vehicle and infrastructure deployment with emphasis on the H2ME projects in the Nordic countries.
The Power2Gas Conference takes place on 17-18 October 2018 in Copenhagen, and will bring together major stakeholders from the industry to explore the latest developments related to this technology.
This one day conference will look at the current and potential use of hydrogen and fuel cells as a zero emission fuel and energy source for the port and maritime industries. It is being organised by European Policy Solutions with the support of the University of Hull.
